Business Owner Reports Scam

One of the owners of a Lawrenceburg-based business reported last week that they had apparently fallen victim to a scam.

Karen Lanning reported the incident through the Lawrenceburg Police Department on Monday. She indicated that they had received two calls in recent months at Rick’s BBQ, 2367 Highway 43 South, Leoma, during which a man requested to place orders to be billed to the Alabama Red Cross.

According to reports, the man ordered food totaling some $555 on February 17, and $636.49 on March 2. She stated that the man identified himself as “James Hamilton” and instructed them to send the bill to the Red Cross. He also provided them with a telephone number, which allowed investigators to develop a lead in the case.

Officers report they were familiar with the telephone number. According to reports, the number was connected to a Lawrenceburg man involved in numerous recent counterfeit check cases. He had also been known, reports stated, to use the name “James Hamilton” as an alias.

At the present time the incidents remain under investigation.
